What this letter does
An HOA shed request letter asks for permission to place a storage building on your lot. Many declarations restrict sheds or accessory structures by size, height, materials, visibility from the street and distance from property lines. A request that addresses each of these shows the committee that the shed will fit the community.
What committees check
- Size and height limits in the documents.
- Matching materials and colors, often with the main house.
- Placement: behind the house, away from easements, and screened from neighbors and the street.
- Foundation and anchoring.
- Use, since some documents bar living or business use.
- Local permit and setback rules, which may be separate.
What to include
- Dimensions and a photo or drawing.
- Materials and colors, with samples.
- A site plan with measurements.
- Screening plan.
- Permit commitment.
- A promise to wait for written approval.

Common questions
Do I need HOA approval for a small shed?
Often yes. Even small structures can require approval, and some declarations ban them. Check the size limits in your documents.
Does a city permit replace HOA approval?
No. The city and the HOA review different things, and you may need both.
